Week 21: Monkfish and happy guests at Einarshús

Two big cod, each of 1,15 m, many smaller ones, several wolffish and one monkfish: This is what Thomas Junker and friends had caught after only two days on board their boat. „The monkfish was great. I actually had never seen one in my life“, reports Karl Otto Mietzner when back ashore in Einarshús in Bolungarvík.

The group of six Germans had chosen an especially comfortable way of accomodation: They were in Einarshús, the cozy hotel and restaurant right at the harbour in Bolungarvík. What on Thursday only made the group still happier than the nice atmosphere at the hotel, was that when they came back from fishing, the staff at Einarshús agreed to prepare the monkfish that had just been brought ashore. „Unbelievably great dinner“, the whole group agreed.

It is not at least the ambiance at the hotel that makes the guests feel being at a really special place. „At other places one might not even be allowed take a seat on these time-honoured armchairs“, remarks Sven Felski and smiles when bending at the cozy old furniture.

This summer groups in Bolungarvík stay both in Einarshús (with meals included) and in Iceland Sea Angling's nine flats in the village.

Week 19: Halibut and Dutchmen

In week 19 most of our guests came from Holland with Cordes Travel. Unfortunately the weather was sort of bad compared to what it is usually like in the West Fjords in May, but we tried to made the most out of it. The guests took part in a cod festival week, but the most surprising catch, however, was a 45,5 kg halibut which was caught by Rafael vd Bosch from Belgium.

Week 18: Sensational beginning of the sea angling season 2012 in Iceland

Last week Iceland Sea Angling hf started successfully in the season 2012. The weather was at its best when 29 guests traveled to the Icelandic West fjords. Especially in the guided tours there were caught big fish.

Jörg Michael Bunzel caught 240 kilos of big cod in Ísafjörður within 8 hours. „The biggest was 1,26 meters and 17 kilos“,  guide Matthias Brill from Bolungarvík reports. Other guests caught wolffish, and also in this case they were successful. Two guests caught 20 wolffish in about 4 hours. Those fish weren't the smallest ones: They were about one meter. According to Matthias Brill there will be especially many wolffish in the fjord this year.

But it was Wihelm Aveskamp who was on to a winner on saturday afternoon. He managed to catch an especially big halibut. „I already had cought a 43-pounds cod, which had been the biggest fish in my life. And then, just before we wantd to return to Bolungarvík, I noticed there was a really big one on the fishing rod“, Aveskamp reports still somewhat exhausted when unloading the fish in Bolungarvík. There had been a monstrous halibut on his fishing rod: After half an hour of drilling the fish was heaved on board by four men. When everything had become official after weighing at the harbour, Wilhelm Aveskamp was totally happy: The halibut of almost 2,30 m was 120 kilos. This was of course celebrated well on saturday evening.
